10 Warning Signs of Vitamin D Deficiency You Shouldn’t Ignore

Vitamin D is not widely distributed in food, so almost everyone should take it. Here are 10 symptoms that indicate a Vitamin D deficiency, and simply taking Vitamin D can help you get rid of them.

1. Constant Fatigue and Tiredness

If you feel exhausted throughout the day, only you can truly assess how fatigued your body is. Some people feel extreme drowsiness between 2-3 PM, which could be due to waking up early and working hard, but if you consistently feel tired throughout the day and especially in the afternoon, your Vitamin D levels may be low. Vitamin D helps balance stress hormones like cortisol, and if it's deficient, your body struggles to regulate energy levels. If you feel exhausted at 8 AM when your energy should be at its peak or highly alert at 2 AM, it could be due to low Vitamin D.

2. Insomnia and Disturbed Sleep

The hypothalamus in your brain regulates hormones, including melatonin, which helps with relaxation and sleep. Melatonin and cortisol have an inverse relationship—when melatonin rises, cortisol falls. At night, melatonin should increase, helping you sleep. However, if you have a Vitamin D deficiency, melatonin doesn’t rise properly, making it difficult for your brain to shut down and causing poor sleep. Another reason for poor sleep could be a magnesium deficiency.

3. Mood Swings and Depression

If you experience mood swings or depression for no clear reason, Vitamin D deficiency could be the culprit. Fatigue, low energy, and poor sleep due to unregulated stress hormones contribute to depression.

4. Hair Loss

Your scalp has Vitamin D receptors. When Vitamin D levels drop, the body prioritizes essential functions and sacrifices less critical ones, such as hair health. Many people have reversed hair loss simply by taking Vitamin D. Additionally, Vitamin D regulates thyroid hormones, cortisol, and sex hormones. If it’s deficient, an increase in dihydrotestosterone (DHT) can occur, leading to baldness. In such cases, along with Vitamin D, DHT inhibitors like onion oil, rosemary oil, and special shampoos can help prevent hair loss.

5. Skin Issues

Vitamin D, along with vitamins A and E, protects the skin from free radical damage and helps rejuvenate it. A deficiency can lead to allergies, rashes, and eczema. While Vitamin A deficiency mostly causes dryness, Vitamin D deficiency is associated with allergies and rashes.

6. Muscle Pain and Soreness

Vitamin D is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent that helps keep inflammation levels low. If you experience frequent muscle soreness or pain, it could be due to a deficiency in Vitamin D and magnesium.

7. Joint Pain and Cracking sounds in the bones

If cracking sounds come from your bones and you experience joint pain and lower back pain, it could indicate a deficiency in Vitamin D, calcium, Vitamin K2, and important joint-supporting supplements like chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid.

8. Gallbladder Issues

If you have gallbladder problems such as gallstones or if your gallbladder has been removed you are almost certainly deficient in Vitamin D. The gallbladder produces bile, which is essential for absorbing fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K. If bile production is compromised, your body cannot absorb these vitamins efficiently. Symptoms like loose stools are also a sign of poor bile function and, consequently, Vitamin D deficiency.

9. Frequent Colds and Weak Immunity

If you catch colds and infections easily, it could be due to a weakened immune system caused by Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D regulates around 90,000 genes in the immune system. If it's deficient, white blood cells become less effective, making you more susceptible to infections.

10. Misleading Lab Reports

Unfortunately, many lab reports falsely label Vitamin D levels of 20-30 ng/mL as "optimal." However, if your Vitamin D is below 40 ng/mL, you still need supplementation.

Sources and Supplementation

Vitamin D is present in dairy, egg yolks, and fatty fish, but not everyone can consume these regularly. Fatty fish is expensive, and dairy doesn’t suit everyone. However, a Vitamin D injection (200,000 IU once a week) can effectively prevent deficiency. By maintaining adequate Vitamin D levels, you can eliminate at least these ten health problems.
